"Where you look affects how you feel"-David Grand, PhD
A body-based and empowerment-oriented approach that uses eye position to access places where the brain and nervous system store unprocessed experience — often material that talk therapy alone can circle for years without reaching. Especially effective for trauma, anxiety, and stuck points that logic hasn’t been able to shift.
Brainspotting is a cutting edge approach that is often compared to EMDR and, in a recent study, BSP may be potentially more effective that EMDR.
Before anything else happens - the client and therapist work together to establish a healthy relationship with the client’s resources. The therapist will give the client education on all the “behind the scenes” brain-science of how Brainspotting works!
(what to expect)
What the heck is Brainspotting?
The client and the therapist work together to identify a point of processing. This entry-point can be a memory, a sensation, a thought, an essence, etc.
The therapist and client work together, often with a pointer (this just helps the client to hold their eye-gaze on a focused point) to determine whether an “inside window” (i.e. an eye-gaze chosen by the client), an “outside window” (i.e. an eye-gaze noticed by the therapist), a resource-spot (a gaze connected to ‘packing’ rather than ‘unpacking’) or a gaze-spot (i.e. a natural gaze the client is looking in conversation) is best for processing.
Once the brain spot is identified, the client is encouraged through their own sense of agency to allow their body and mind to process at their own pacing and desire for talking. The therapist works as a co-regulating anchor in the space who checks-in and interrupts any circular thought to support lasting-healing.
The therapist and the client work together to then debrief, organize and process through words, movement, creativity, etc. The topic of focus can be revisited until activation is eventually lowered and feels manageable in the day-to-day.
